With this recession, many think it’s impossible to land your dream job. I’m here to tell you otherwise. You can land your dream job by utilizing LinkedIn to it’s full potential.

Why?

LinkedIn is growing every day and many of the fortune 500 companies are using it to recruit new employees. There are even conferences for HR personnel on how to utilize LinkedIn to match up their specific requirements to candidates all by searching online. The problem is that many users on LinkedIn don’t optimize their profile. If you optimize your profile and start making connections on LinkedIn, you can land your next job.

Where?

How?

  • The first thing you need to do is ask if you have the skills required for your dream job. If you don’t, go out there and get them.
  • Optimize your LinkedIn profile. As the digital age progresses, the need for an online resume that’s well written and optimized, becomes more and more important.
  • Join groups on LinkedIn that match up with your profession. There are many recruiters that lurk these groups for the best candidate.
  • PARTICIPATE IN THE DISCUSSION. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH.
  • Make connections with the professionals in within the company that you would like to be a part of. Many call this stalking. I call it strategy.
  • Apply for the jobs that are posted through the LinkedIn website. Eventually, you will get recognized
  • Keep applying, honing your skills and making connections.

I’m currently doing all the above and I’m making more job interviews than I ever have before. I haven’t landed my dream career yet but I’m not giving up. Hopefully I will update you soon with positive results.

That’s all for today everyone! Take care!~

No it’s not the economy, politics, stupid people. To put it simply, people have lost touch on how to actually run a business successfully. Instead of focusing on the customer, many new businesses focus on making money to grow the business more. I’ll explain by giving real life examples.

Lately I’ve been looking for small businesses to go to and invest my time/money. I want to help out the small guy and not the corporate monsters. In my search, I’ve been to many small businesses. Some of those businesses are doing well and some are doing TERRIBLE.

Being the nerd that I am, I started taking notes of what worked and what didn’t. You know what I found? The #1 cause of a small business failure is a combination of poor planning and not caring about the customer AT ALL. Passion should always be the reason to start a business. Starting your own business is about sharing your passion with the world so others might take on that passion as well.

NEVER START A BUSINESS TO MAKE MONEY. PERIOD. EXCLAMATION POINT!

I hate it when I walk into a business and there is no interaction. Come on people! If I’m coming into your business for the first time, I don’t want to feel like a stranger or someone who doesn’t belong, I would like to feel like your neighbor down the street or your good friend! If I come in and don’t know exactly what I’m looking for, help me out! You aren’t going to make a sale just by standing there and giving me a blank look.

Now I’ll tell you why small businesses succeed.

I’ll tell you by giving you a perfect example. My family wanted to start getting organic, grass fed meat. We didn’t think there was one around until we started to do some research. We found this small shop in downtown Indianapolis that looked like it was exactly what we wanted! We pulled up and walked into the store. Immediately, we were greeted by everyone there. No, it wasn’t some corporate bullshit slogan that the manager makes everyone do. The greeting was genuine. I thought to myself…

Wow, you don’t get treated like that every day…

I didn’t even buy anything yet! I just walked into the store! They didn’t stop there, I was looking at different meats and didn’t really know what I wanted. I started to ask quite a few questions and the staff were more than helpful and got me everything I wanted. I came in to look around and they sold me on 3 different meats already! While they were HAND-PREPARING the meat, they told us that we could go look around downstairs at the wine and beer cellar. We walked down and HOLY CRAP! This place was amazing. There were tons of unique wines and IPA beers to select from. I even found my favorite pumpkin brew! While we were downstairs, we met another employee greeted us and started to talk to us about some different new brews that they had and why they were awesome!

We ended up spending around $30 which was CHEAP for 3 different meats and some beer! Mind you, this was locally farmed and organic meat. We really could tell the difference! When walking in to explorer, there wasn’t a plan in my mind to get a whole bunch of meat, but without hesitating, I didn’t mind spending some money at this small business. You know why? They shared their passion with me and as a consumer, I WANT them to stay around.

If you didn’t learn anything from this post, I feel bad for you.

Last Wednesday, Google release a new app on their Google+ platform. This app is called Google+ Events. It’s a new way of creating, inviting and sharing events in the social media realm.

Many might argue that Facebook has an events page and there are many invitation services out there. I would have to concur, but there is one HUGE addition that Google has brought to the table that I think might be a game changer. It’s called “Party Mode.”

“Party Mode” is an option that can be turned on or off but doesn’t start until the event starts. Once the mode is on and the guest has checked in, every photo or video that is taken, is posted straight to the event page, live.

Pretty cool, huh?

Now here is how it makes a difference in SEO. Google is really wanting new and creative content that’s diverse, right? Well utilizing all of the different social media mediums will only help that out. If you host an event and everyone is posting photos and videos and the event starts to get more traffic, Google will only look at that with positive eyes versus negative eyes. SEO is becoming more and more social. People want to know what companies are doing and I believe that the more companies are involved with the community, they will naturally rank higher than “robot-like” companies that just submit links all day through directories.

I’m going to stand by my outlook on SEO. Love and interact with the “community” via social-networks, Google and the people will love you back by higher rankings and more links. It’s simple, people post what they like to see, not spam from a directory somewhere out there…

That’s all I have for today! Check out this video and see for yourself that G+ might be the way of the future!

So we all hate night shifts. This is how to survive and  deal with night shift, from a Dad’s point of view.

  • My first tip is pretty easy to understand: GET SLEEP BEFORE YOU WORK. I know that many feel like they are missing out on the day but if you want to function at all, you need to get sleep. It’s always preferred to get 8 hours of sleep but I can only crank out 6 at the max then take a nap later.
  • When you get off of your shift, allow yourself an hour or two to decompress and relax. I usually use that to spend time with my daughter. She is always happy in the mornings and it’s great to spend some quality time with her!
  • Try a natural sleeping supplement. DON’T GET PRESCRIPTION SLEEPING PILLS . They will screw you up. What I have discovered that works for me is Sweet Slumber. Taking this will really help you survive the night shift ordeal.
  • Eat as if you are on a normal day shift. This one is tough but when you wake up, eat breakfast. It’s only natural. However, you will find yourself eating a little bit more at night. That’s okay because your body will need more fuel at first to deal with the night shift that you are on.
  • Coffee is your FRIEND. New research has actually shown that regular coffee, in a decent amount, can actually be good for your health. Check this out to read more about that.
  • Last but not least, earn the support of your family so you can rest easy. It’s never a good thing to go to sleep with no support. You will continue to wake up, wondering if it’s okay.

I hope these tips really help you all out deal with night shift! If you really start to fall asleep, get someone to punch you! It will work!
