Going back to School!

February 8, 2012 — Leave a comment

It’s official! I’m going back to school in the next couple of months! It’s time for a change…

My school is paid off and it’s about that time to go and finish up my bachelors degree. I’m switching to Information Technology with a focus in Security!

With technology growing rapidly and everything going to some sort of cloud, the need for security will only increase. This is the best job to get in I think. We will see what happens. I will be attending Western Governors University. They have the absolute best plan for me. I can take courses on my own time schedule and if I know the material, I can test out of the class. Believe it or not, the school has been pretty difficult to get into. I still have one test left to pass. That test is the resume review. They are going to review my resume to see if I’m fit for the university or not! I feel like I’m interviewing for a job and I like that. It keeps all of the “riff-raff” out of the university and helps the mentors spend more time on students that care.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately but I have been super busy getting everything back together. The Dad Blog will continue!

So many of you are wondering what my plan is for life in the next 3 years? Here it is:

I’ve been contemplating for many months now what my next move is in life. There have been many discussions between myself and people who are close to me. It’s hard to know exactly might happen but I’ve come up with a couple of plans.

Plan #1

  1. Save up money for the next three years to pay off all of our outstanding debt: $30,000 (that includes student loans)
  2. Go back to school and get bachelors degree
  3. Find a job in Indianapolis
  4. Build up Dad Blog to become more popular

Plan # 2

  1. Save up money for the next three years to pay off all of our outstanding debt: $30,000 (that includes student loans)
  2. Get deployed to save up money for a house
  3. Build up Dad Blog to become more popular
  4. Eventually go back to school and do deployment jobs until I finish school

As you all can see. Both of the choices are almost the same but there is just one difference. The difference is just if I’m going to stay in Indianapolis or not. My family and I would love to stay in Indianapolis but if we can’t find anything in the next few years, it looks like I will be deploying.

I have decided – My wife and I are going to start vlogging and posting the video every week. Why take even more time to do this? I’ll explain…

My wife is already doing a great job at keeping videos of our daughter and uploading the compilations to her youtube. We made a pact to create a weekly vlog and upload it to our youtbe at www.youtube.com/noobparents . We are a few weeks behind and have some catching up to do with the footage but don’t worry! We have all of the footage that we need.   So what are the benefits of vlogging? Let me just list a few:

  • Keep a dated video record of your life online
  • Earn new subscribers to both your blogs and your videos
  • Bring in a pretty good income if you can become a youtube partner’
  • Meet new people with your same interests!

Those are just a few reasons for vlogging. The main one is being able to keep a dated video record of our life. I don’t really care about the subscribers or income part. Sure it would be nice but if it doesn’t happen, I will always enjoy watching my old vlogs. Many businessman and businesswomen are posting vlogs to bring traffic to their business. Realtors have the best luck with this type of technique because it’s free marketing for their properties.

Enough of me rambling and watch our first vlog. The second one is on it’s way shortly!

It’s a brand new day and I’m tired! I hate night shift! LOLz

So I woke up to quite a nice surprise this morning. Take a look at the screenshots below:

I don’t know if I have someone to thank or myself to thank but…THANK YOU! I’m glad to see that my hard work could possibly be paying off. My same strategy that I employed on my wife’s blog is working as well! What did I do exactly? I will tell you!

  1. I uninstalled the crappy “All-In-One SEO” Plugin from the blogs and installed the new SEO by YOAST plugin. What a difference.
  2. Social media has always been big to me but I haven’t utilized it for my blogs. I employed utilization of Social Media on Twitter, Facebook, G+, StumbleUpon and a few other submission websites.
  3. The biggest thing that has helped so far? I’m being genuine and reading my favorite blogs and creating legitimate comments on them. If it brings some extra traffic, great. Even if it didn’t bring other traffic, I love the sense of community when I talk with other bloggers with my same interest.

On the job search front, I recently applied for a few companies in Indianapolis. The main one that I really hope I get a call back from is Slingshot SEO. I respect their business and the practices that they do. There SEO is an art and I want to learn from the best.

I’m currently on military active duty orders but should be off of them by October of this year. I’m hoping to have something lined up by then. The main problem that I’m facing is that I don’t have a college degree. I’m working on that but it’s tough with shift work, a brand new daughter and my extra business ventures on the side.

Well I’m out for today! I hope you all enjoy the rest of your thursday!

With the economy the way it is today – We are all looking to save an extra buck…

There are many ways you can do this but the key is sticking to your guns in saving. I will be the first to admit that I haven’t been doing that great of a job this month. Our family has been going out to eat for almost every meal the past couple of weeks. The excuse? None. We are setting ourselves back into saving motion next month – when our budget resets. Here are many of the small ways that we take to save some extra cash.

  1. USE THE ENVELOPE SYSTEM: I can’t tell everyone enough. When you know exactly how much cash you have left for the month, you are less likely to spend 20 bucks on that shirt that you kind of want.
  2. When coming back from shopping – put all of your extra change in a jar. It really adds up! In a couple of months, we have saved over $50 bucks in change alone! That’s a nice little date HUSBANDS!
  3. Use coupons everywhere you go – including shopping at the mall: Stores will always have some type of deal and not taking advantage of it is simply making you pay more when you could have saved 10-15 percent on the item. We have a very good printer to print most of these coupons
  4. Go grocery shopping for what you are only going to eat. Go to the grocery store after eating a meal and not before dinner needs to be cooked. Studies have shown time and time again that going to the store when you are hungry will make you by unhealthy and unnecessary foods.
  5. Plan your meals before going grocery shopping.
  6. Sell the stuff you have laying around the house on ebay. Someone out there needs that extra extension cord that is in your “electronics” box. (I’m doing this soon and I will post the outcome.)
  7. Ever heard of a store closing? Check them out – you never know what you might find. Today I found a CD and t-shirt of a good band for 5 bucks instead of the original 28 dollars. That’s 23 bucks in savings!
  8. Don’t take the easy way out – instead of buying it, see if you can create it instead! ( I will start posting more of my creations on here very soon. )
  9. Store brand or name brand? This one should be easy. STORE BRAND!
  10. Lastly, always ask yourself if you want it or need it? Feel free to come back later to decide.

Those are my tips for saving a few extra bucks. A lot of these might sound easy but they can be hard to stick to! Let me know what you do to save a couple of extra bucks!
