So I have recently discovered that I will most likely be laid off towards the end of the year. Instead of just waiting for the worst to happen, I’m going to prepare. I will share my tips on how to prepare – getting laid off.
Start polishing your resume – There will most likely be quite a bit of updating that will need to be done to your resume because let’s face it, not many people update their resumes when they currently have a job.
Run the numbers – There is nothing worst than getting laid off and realizing that you have absolutely no cash saved up and how much you will need to make the bill payments. Included in this step is checking to see what your state unemployment benefits will be. With all of the numbers set aside, create an “unemployment budget.” This will take some of the stress out, I swear.
Brainstorm alternative forms of income - You never know, this could be a blessing in disguise. Many millionaires have been made from becoming unemployed. At the very least, it will be nice not working for the man for just a little bit, right?
Plan to actually finish school - I know I’m speaking to quite a few of you out there. Get into that state of mind because this could be the wake up call that you actually need to earn that degree. The job market is getting tougher and tougher for those who don’t have a degree. Suck it up and earn it. I know I’m going to.
Start hustling your skills - Ever heard of linkedin? Start using it. There are tons of groups out there that you can utilize your networking skills to help land that next gig. Don’t try to pursue a job just for the sake of having a job. Search for your dream career, this is your time, utilize it correctly and efficiently. Employers want to know that you want the dream career, not another job/paycheck that will keep you afloat for the next few years.
That’s all I have for this post! I apologize if it is short but I write simply and to the point. Please let me know what your layoff tips are in the comment section below or shoot me a quick email! I apologize for the lack of writing recently, I have just recently moved and have no internet so this is the first chance I have been able to break away to an internet cafe to write!
